Donna Hill Howes answered:A total knee replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is surgery to remove the entire knee joint and replace it with an artificial joint. Total knee replacement is done when osteoarthritis causes such severe pain that it is hard to engage in normal daily activities. After the surgery, you will need to do physical therapy and home exercises for three to six months.

Dr. Travis M. Hendry of Intermountain Healthcare answered:When the cartilage in the knee cap wears out, often due to arthritis, the bones rub against each other and can cause pain in your knee. In total knee replacement surgery, diseased and arthritic cartilage is removed and replaced with metal and plastic parts. This restores the smooth surfaces of the joint and allows your knee to move without pain. The surgery lasts 1-1 1/2 hours and can be done under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia. It requires a stay in the hospital.
