Think of the thalamus as a train station in a major city that acts as a hub for many smaller locations. That's because many different parts of the brain run through it; the thalamus takes sensory information from the spine and then fine-tunes what movements you make before they even start. It's really responsible for making actions smooth (problems with the thalamus can result in tremors or non-smooth motor movement).
