    The parotid gland is a major salivary gland that secretes saliva into the mouth. Swelling can occur when stones form and obstruct the flow of saliva through draining tubes called salivary ducts located near the upper teeth. The gland typically swells during eating when saliva production is most active and then gradually returns to normal size.
