    Baptist Health South Florida answered:

STEMI stands for ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction. A STEMI occurs when a coronary artery suddenly is blocked, obstructing blood flow to the heart muscle. Every year, nearly 400,000 people in the United States fall victim to a STEMI, and only one in three receives the necessary cardiac treatment within the recommended time frame.

The lifesaving treatment for a STEMI is angioplasty, in which a heart specialist inserts a catheter, or narrow tube, into the blocked artery and opens it with a tiny balloon. A stent sometimes is used to keep the artery open.
