What is a sexual health doctor?

Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:Sexual health is such an important part of life that you would think there would be a medical specialty for it. There may be soon. Some doctors are working to create a board-certified specialty in sexual medicine. In the meantime, many physicians, such as urologists, are beginning to specialize in sexual medicine on their own. Some major teaching hospitals now have a sexual medicine department. Some urologists also have started to specialize in sexual problems in men, such as erectile dysfunction (ED). If you are seeking treatment for ED with a urologist, you may want to seek out one who specializes in sexual medicine.

Dr. Bonnie Lynn Wright of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:The answer to this question is not as simple as it looks! If you mean sexual health as reproductive health and if you mean doctor as physician, then a sexual health doctor is a Gynecologist for women and a Urologist for men. However, if you mean who should I see if I have a sexual health problem, that's a more complicated issue. In general, go to your primary care provider, whether a physician or nurse practitioner, to start and they will help you to sort out resources from there. There are counselors who have been trained to work with sexual health issues, psychologists, psychiatrists, sex therapists and more. By working with your primary care provider, the two of you will make the right choice to resolve the issue.

Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:A sexual health doctor treats physical problems with the reproductive system, including impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction or ED), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), hormonal imbalances and infertility. A primary care physician--for instance, a family practitioner or internist--who has expertise in sexual health can treat reproductive issues, but men may see a urologist instead while women may see a gynecologist. A psychiatrist or psychologist is also considered a sexual health doctor, because he or she counsels people on emotional issues that affect intimacy and relationships.
