    Protonix (pantoprazole) is a prescription drug used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which the stomach produces excess acid. Protonix prevents production of stomach acid. Therefore, the contents or the stomach will not be acidic enough to cause heartburn and damage to the esophagus. This drug belongs to the class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors.
