With appropriate treatment (IV steroids and/or IVIG or plasmapheresis) most patients with ADEM recover completely.  Patients with certain viral infections prior to the onset of their symptoms or those who present with or develop more severe symptoms such as brain swelling or seizures may have residual weakness, learning disabilities, mental retardation or seizures.  Severe cases of ADEM can be fatal.
