Plan B (levonorgestrel) is the most common type of emergency contraception, which can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or after contraception failure (for example, a condom breaking). Plan B comes in two forms:
    • Medication in two doses, taken 12 hours apart
    • Medication taken as a single dose of 2 pills (Plan B One-Step)

Plan B is an emergency-contraception pill available without a prescription to people over age 17. It works within 72 hours of unprotected sex, the sooner the better. It is a high dose of the hormones in birth-control pills to prevent pregnancy. It is commonly used in situations where a condom breaks or women forget to take regular birth-control pills. Plan B is not the same as an abortion pill, which causes miscarriage. If you already are pregnant, or if a fertilized egg has formed, it will not work.
