Dr. Irene Semenov of NorthShore University HealthSystem answered:
Pharmacoresistant or refractory epilepsy is defined as multiple recurrent seizures despite the treatment with two or more anti-epileptic drugs. About 20-30% of all patients with new onset epilepsy are refractory to treatment. It is not clear why certain types of epilepsy are more resistant to treatment than others. A patient with refractory epilepsy should be referred to an epilepsy center for further treatment options.
