Over striding is an issue that occurs to many people that walk for exercise and also with runners.

When walkers try to walk fast, a natural inclination is to lengthen your stride in front, reaching out further with your forward foot. This can lead to a clumsy, ungainly gait, striking hard with the feet. The result is your shins hurt and you don't get any faster.

With runners, overstriding is one of the most common mistakes that can cause injuries. When a runner overstrides, the foot lands well ahead of the body's center of gravity. Some runners think that a longer stride will improve running speed or efficiency. That, however, is not true.

The solution is to make sure that you don't lunge forward with your feet. Focus on landing mid-sole, with your foot directly beneath your body with every step.

Over-striding is running with a stride that is longer than optimal for your body length. Over-striding is sometimes used to train sprinters and runners to increase stride length for runners who have a stride length that is too short. Over-striding decreases running efficiency and puts you at risk for injury by altering running mechanics and over stressing the muscles and joints of the lower limb.
