    A child is obese when he weighs too much for his age and height. Obesity is measured by using body mass index (BMI). Healthcare providers learn your child's BMI from his age, height and weight. A child is at risk for obesity when his BMI is between 85 and 95 percent of what is right for his age. A child is obese when his BMI is more than 95-percent higher than what is right for his age.
