National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:When we exercise the duration and intensity determines which energy we use to produce the activity. If we exercise for extended periods of time our cells and muscles need the assistance of oxygen to produce energy. When this is done, the exercise is considered aerobic, meaning requires the use of oxygen. If we exercise for brief amounts of time, less than 2 minutes, our body has enough energy producing molecules, called ATP. These molecules produce movement during this short amount of time, thus oxygen is not required. This type of exercise is called anaerobic.
