Namenda is the brand name for memantine, a medication with activity on the learning and memory processes of the brain. Namenda treats Alzheimer's disease by preventing nerve damage. It belongs to a family of drugs known as NMDA receptor antagonists. Alzheimer's disease is a condition in which certain chemicals in the brain lead to nerve damage and result in altered memory and learning ability. Memantine, the active ingredient in Namenda, targets that process to block the nerve damage. Namenda does not cure or prevent Alzheimer's disease. It treats the symptoms caused by the condition.
