Microtia means "small ear." It is a birth defect of the outer ear, and results from incomplete development of the ear while the fetus is developing in the womb. Many parents are upset when their child is born with such a defect, but you should be comforted in knowing that surgery can correct this condition.

There are three different types of ear reconstruction.

    • Otoplasty (the treatment of prominent ears)
    • Microtia repair (the treatment of congenitally malformed / missing ears)
    • Ear defects (from trauma or cancer surgery)

Our surgeons use two different strategies to reconstruct the ear in children (and sometimes adults) with microtia. For many patients, the new ear is created from their own tissue (autologous). Cartilage from the rib cage is used. In some cases, the parents or patient prefer to have an artificial ear created by our artist who specializes in this difficult art.

It is common for a child born with microtia to have other health problems.

Microtia has been reported to occur once in every 6,000 births.

    Dr. Stuart Linder answered:

Microtia can be defined as a lack of development of the ear (auricle). This is a congenital deformity where the ear is often underdeveloped. Complete absence of the ear is referred to as anotia. It occurs in about 1-8,000 births. The right is more commonly affected than the left. Increased incidence in babies born from mothers taking Accutane. Hearing testing must be done and CT scans at 5 years of age to evaluate the middle ear. Reconstruction usually occurs at the age of 6 and up to allow for the use of rib cartilage for molding a new auricle.
