Medical nutrition, or nutritional therapy, provides people with products that supplement an inadequate diet due to any number of conditions. Medical nutrition typically comes in a liquid form, although it also is available in the form of powders, tablets, injections or foods such as yogurt or pudding. With medical nutrition therapy, you will be provided with medical nutrition as well as professional advice about how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

    • cancers (especially those featuring solid tumors)
    • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • diabetes
    • eating disorder recovery
    • food allergies or other specific diet considerations
    • gastrointestinal disorders, such as celiac disease
    • Crohn's disease and cirrhosis
    • immune system disorders, such as HIV or AIDS
    • inherited disorders affecting metabolism - involuntary weight loss
    • kidney disease or malfunction
    • sarcopenia in which someone experiences muscle loss due to age
    • surgery recovery
    • weight management
    • woman's health
    • including anemia
    • pregnancy and osteoporosis
    • wounds, especially pressure ulcers in the body

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is the application of the science of food and nutrition to the prevention and treatment of acute or chronic disease. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics defines MNT as "the use of specific nutrition services to treat an illness, injury, or condition." It is a two-fold process that involves the screening and assessment of an individuals nutrition status using dietary intake, lab values, body size measures, and physical examination data. It also involves providing appropriate treatment that includes dietary therapy, behavior and nutrition counseling and education, and nutritional supplements as needed. MNT may require the use of nutrient rich whole food sources, specialized formulas, or dietary supplements depending on the illness and condition being treated. Registered Dietitians are the only health professionals specifically trained in providing MNT. Other health professionals may have some knowledge of nutrition therapy but lack the specific training in assessment, intervention, monitoring and evaluation of MNT.

Most chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, HIV/AIDS, Chron's disease, kidney disease, food sensitivities and allergies, cancers and many others benefit from MNT. Ask your insurance company or physician for a referral to a Registered Dietitian if you have questions about how nutrition can help you. Or go to http://www.eatright.org and click on "Find a Registered Dietitian."

Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) includes a wide variety of treatments based on the nutritional status of the patient. The intensity of the therapy varies greatly, ranging from a few changes in dietary intake to tube or intravenous feeding.

Medical nutrition therapy may be useful in treating or controlling heart disease, diabetes, AIDS, cancer, kidney disease and many other health related conditions. While often used as part of a palliative care treatment, relatively healthy people may also use this therapy for minor dietary adjustments. Complementary nutrition therapy optimizes nutritional health in order to enhance medical care and treatment. Medical nutrition therapy is not a cure for terminal illness but can improve a patient's quality of life.

According to The American Dietetic Association medical nutrition therapy and lifestyle counseling are integral components of medical treatment for the management of selected conditions. Numerous chronic medical conditions respond to medical nutrition therapy; however, pharmacotherapy may be needed to achieve control. In some cases, medical nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy may need to be initiated simultaneously. Medical nutrition therapy is critical to the management of a variety of chronic diseases, is effective in managing disease, and is cost-effective. Strong evidence advocating certain types of medical nutrition therapy lies in the extremely high usage of parenteral and enteral nutritional formulas in many health care settings today. Parenteral feedings may allow people who are not able to take any food orally to get the nutrients that they need to survive.

Promising uses of medical nutrition therapy for the future reside in a vast array of conditions, such as supplying proper nutrients to people with HIV/AIDS and cancer, or possibly helping to decrease the prevalence of type II diabetes.

You should read product labels, and discuss all therapies with a qualified healthcare provider. Natural Standard information does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Medical nutrition is how foods affect the body from a clinical standpoint. For example, medical nutrition therapy reviews how specific foods affect a certain disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders. A registered dietitian might prescribe a low fat, low cholesterol diet as part of a medical nutrition therapy plan for a patient with heart disease. Find an RD in your area at eatright.org.
