What is meconium?
-
Healthwise answered:Meconium is a thick, greenish black substance that forms in the intestines of an unborn child (fetus). As the fetus swallows and digests the fluid (amniotic fluid) inside the womb, it produces meconium.
When the baby is born, meconium is the first stool the baby passes.
Meconium in the amniotic fluid may be a sign that the newborn experienced stress before birth. If meconium gets into the baby's lungs, it can cause irritation and inflammation of the lungs.

Dr. W. Cannon Marriott of Intermountain Healthcare answered:Meconium is fluid that is in the baby's intestine prior to delivery. After delivery, in the first day of life, most babies have a large poop that is very sticky and black—that's called meconium. In the next few days, that will lighten up into a green color, and if the feedings are going well, it will turn yellow.Meconium is fluid that is in the baby's intestine prior to delivery.
