    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
Any pain in the lower region of your back -- whether short-term (acute) or of long duration (chronic); mild, moderate, or intense and disabling -- falls under the umbrella diagnosis of low back pain. After the common cold, low back pain is the most common reason why people go to the doctor. It may affect up to 80 percent of adults in the U.S. and is a leading cause of disability and missed days of work.

Low back pain can often be prevented by strengthening your back muscles, and injury to your back can be avoided by learning to move, lift, or carry heavy objects in a safer manner.

Pain in the lower back is a symptom that can take many forms. It is not a disease, although very rarely it may be due to a disease. Most of the time, lower-back pain appears suddenly, and often it is agonizing. But it may also be experienced as a low-key pain. Lower-back pain that lasts less than six months is usually considered acute. Lower-back pain that lasts longer than six months is considered chronic.

    Healthwise answered:

Low back pain is pain in your back anywhere below the ribs and above the legs. It can be dull or sharp. You might feel it in only one spot or over a broad area. Some people also have numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs from a pinched nerve in the back.

Most back pain gets better within 4 to 6 weeks with home treatment like exercises and taking over-the-counter pain medicine. But in some people the pain lasts longer.

Most people who have low back pain get it again at least once.
