Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Banding) for weight loss is a less invasive and less dangerous technique than gastric bypass surgery that restricts the size of the stomach but does not limit absorption of nutrients. It was introduced in the early 1990s. A silicone band is placed around the upper stomach and can be tightened after the surgery, further limiting how much food can pass through. The death rate with this surgery is ten times lower than with gastric bypass, but the complication rate is about the same. As the procedure becomes more common, complication rates are expected to decline. About half of the excess weight is lost during the first two years and then the weight loss continues at a slower rate; it is possible to lose as much weight as with gastric bypass.
