Dr. David Fishman of The Mount Sinai Medical Center answered:
Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome is an inherited condition that significantly increases an individual's risk of certain cancers. HBOC syndrome is caused by deleterious mutations on the breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2) genes. Since breast cancer gene (BRCA) mutations are inherited in autosomal dominant pattern, there is a 50% chance that the mutation will be passed from a parent who carries the mutation to each child.
