Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:Gingivitis is a condition in which the gums, or gingivae, become swollen and red and prone to bleed. This inflammation signals an early stage of gum disease and is often reversible. However, if left untreated, gingivitis may lead to the more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulGingivitis is a condition in which the gums, or gingivae, become swollen and red and prone to bleed. Dr. Edmond Hewlett answered:Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease (an infection that affects the tissues and bone that support teeth). It causes the gums to become red and swollen and to bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis can be reversed with treatment in the dental office and good oral care at home.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulGingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease (an infection that affects the tissues and bone that support teeth). Healthwise answered:Gingivitis is a milder type of gum disease. Gingivitis causes red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushed, and it may cause bad breath.
Because pain is not usually a symptom of gingivitis, many people do not seek treatment. If not treated, gum disease can progress to advanced gum disease (periodontitis), which may lead to loss of teeth.
Gingivitis is caused by poor tooth care. It can be prevented, treated, and reversed by brushing twice a day—in the morning and before bedtime—and flossing once a day.
