  1. Gender identity disorder is a condition in which people feel their gender identity does not match their anatomic sex characteristics. For instance, someone who was born as a male with male sex characteristics (penis, testes, etc.) may feel strongly that he is actually a female but in the "wrong " body. This condition, also known as gender dysphoria or transgenderism, may start to appear very early in childhood. Treatment for gender identity disorder often involves psychological counseling to help people adapt, and in some cases, it may involve sex reassignment surgery.

Individuals who have gender disorder identify with the sex opposite of their assigned biological sex. They feel as if they are not in the right body, and yearn to be someone other than who they are. These feelings begin in early childhood and have been considered disordered thinking in the past. Not too long ago, such gender issues were seen as choices, not biologically bound within one's DNA. Research now shows that there is a genetic link for gender identity.
