What is gamma knife radiation?

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital answered:Using a three-dimensional approach, it is capable of directing up to 201 beams of gamma radiation to converge, with pinpoint accuracy, on a target within the brain. The gamma knife technology allows for the highest level of precision in positioning radiosurgical beams, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and increasing effectiveness. Unlike traditional open skull procedures, which can require several days in the hospital and weeks or months of recuperation, people treated with the gamma knife can often go home the same day and return to work or school immediately.

Dr. Harold Pikus of Baptist Health South Florida answered:The Gamma Knife is a brand of medical device that delivers focused, high-dose radiation. Physicians like to refer to this type of radiation treatment as “radiosurgery” because of its surgical precision and surgery-like results.
The Gamma Knife uses roughly 200 independent radioactive cobalt sources to provide the radiation for the treatment. These are coordinated and focused by a computer-based robotic delivery system.
The treatment is painless and highly effective with markedly reduced complication rates compared to open surgeries. Like all medical tools, it has many uses. But, at the same time, may not be applicable to every situation.
