    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Erwinaze (asparaginase Erwinia chrysanthemi) is a medication used as part of a chemotherapy regimen for some people with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a cancer. It is one of a group of drugs called asparaginases because they act on the amino acid asparagine. It's specifically used for people who have become allergic to two other drugs that target asparagine, Elspar and Oncaspar, which are derived from a different source.

Erwinaze is called an "orphan drug" because it is expected to treat fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.
