    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Erivedge (vismodegib) is a prescription drug to treat basal cell cancer, a common form of skin cancer. It may be prescribed when basal cell cancer has spread to other parts of the body, cannot be treated with radiation or surgery or has returned after surgery. It's also sometimes prescribed when someone has a medical condition that prevents him or her from having radiation or surgery.

Erivedge is a pill that you take once a day. It interferes with a biological process that basal cell cancer requires to spread. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2012.
