Johns Hopkins Medicine answered:Endoscopic sinus surgery is a surgical procedure used to remove blockages in the sinuses. These blockages can lead to sinusitis and other conditions, in which the sinuses swell and become blocked, causing pain and impaired breathing. Endoscopic sinus surgery is used to relieve symptoms associated with:
- Sinusitis
- Septal deviations or turbinate hypertrophy
- Nasal polyps
The goal of surgery is to improve both the drainage of the sinuses and the airflow through the nose. Benefits include:
- Reduction in the number and severity of sinus infections
- Improvement in symptoms associated with sinusitis
- Improvement of airflow through the nose
- Improvement in a patient's sense of smell (in many cases)

Healthwise answered:In endoscopic sinus surgery, an endoscope is inserted into the nose, providing the doctor with an inside view of the sinuses.
Surgical instruments are inserted alongside the endoscope. This allows the doctor to remove small amounts of bone or other material blocking the sinus openings and remove growths (polyps) of the mucous membrane. In some cases a laser is used to burn away tissue blocking the sinus opening. A small rotating burr that scrapes away tissue may also be used.
The surgery may be done in a hospital or in a doctor's office or clinic. Either local or general anesthesia may be used. The procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes.
