What is Diovan HCT?
-
Stacy Wiegman answered:Diovan HCT is a prescription drug that contains two prescription medications: valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), which blocks a substance that makes blood vessels constrict, and hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill, or diuretic. Diovan HTC can be used to decrease hypertension, or high blood pressure, in adults. Research on Diovan HTC has not been conducted in children under the age of 18 years.

Dr. Nicole Basile of MDLIVE answered:Diovan HCT is a combination medication that contains both Valsartan (Diovan), a blood pressure lowering medication in the class called ARB (Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker), and Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic (fluid pill). Together these medications lower blood pressure more than each medication alone. To maximize the effectiveness of Diovan HCT, a low sodium diet (2000mg per day or less) should be followed.
