    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:

The heart is a very efficient organ, pumping nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood to all muscles in the body, including the heart itself. Compromise blood flow to the heart muscle, and cells begin to die, electrical nodes that control the heart's rhythm go haywire, and the heart is no longer a well-organized pump.

Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of a heart attack. It occurs when the arteries are clogged with plaque deposits that prevent blood from flowing freely. Comprised of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other debris, the plaque can partially or totally block the flow of blood and promote blood clots. Over time, the plaque thickens in a process known as atherosclerosis. Clots can travel to vessels of the heart, lungs, and brain. Left untreated, atherosclerosis can lead to a heart attack, stroke, and death.

  2. Coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease or simply heart disease, is the narrowing of arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart. The buildup of plaque over time causes the narrowing, hardening the arteries and constricting blood flow to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause shortness of breath, chest pains, and heart attack. It is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States.

    Dr. Nassir Azimi answered:

Heart disease can involve the muscle, the pump, the valves, the electrical system, the pericardium. When it affects the coronaries mainly as blockages in the arteries leading to angina or heart failure or event heart attack it is known as coronary heart disease.

Coronary artery disease is also called coronary heart disease or CHD, heart disease caused by narrowing of the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. If the blood supply is cut off, the result is a heart attack.

    HealthyWomen answered:
Coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease and ischemic heart disease, is a disease of the heart's blood vessels that, if untreated, can cause heart attacks. Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is CHD.

    Penn Medicine answered:

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a buildup of cholesterol and fatty deposits in the arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. As these arteries become clogged, less blood reaches the heart muscle. One or more heart attacks can damage the heart muscle. When large areas of the heart are damaged, the heart does not pump like it should. The healthy areas of the heart work harder to try to pump all the blood that is needed. Over time, the heart chambers stretch (dilate) and the heart muscles get larger (hypertrophy). This is called cardiac remodeling and can lead to heart failure.

In its broadest sense, "coronary" is an adjective that refers to anything related to the heart. Used that way, "coronary heart disease" would mean a redundant "heart disease in the heart." But the word also has a more specific meaning: relating to, or being, the arteries and veins of the heart. These are the vessels that lie on the outside of the heart and feed the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients and whisk away carbon dioxide. So "coronary heart disease" is generally used to mean heart disease stemming from coronary arteries narrowed or blocked by atherosclerosis. In countries like the United States, where coronary artery disease is the overwhelmingly dominant heart problem, the terms "coronary heart disease" and "coronary artery disease" are used interchangeably.
