Congenital hypothyroidism affects infants from birth. The condition results when there is complete or partial loss of function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland makes hormones that contain iodine, which plays an important part in regulating the infant’s brain development, growth and metabolism. In many cases, the thyroid gland is completely absent. If treatment begins within the first month of life, the infant may have normal development.
