  1. In auditory processing disorder, people have difficulty making meaning out of the sounds they hear. This disorder does not refer to problems in the mechanism of the ear. Rather, the problems occur after a sound is "heard" by the ear. This disorder especially affects the ability of people to understand spoken language, because the differences between various sounds and words may be small.
