    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
That’s when part of your intestines protrudes through a weakness or opening in the membrane that holds it in place, allowing the tissue to intrude upon the scrotum. When the bulge gets stuck, blood flow can be cut off, and that hurts. It’s not an emergency when the hernia can still be “reduced,” or pushed back into its normal place in the abdomen, which transiently relieves the pain. But it’s called an incarcerated hernia when it can’t get reduced--the bulge is stuck in jail and wants to get out--and usually needs immediate fixing surgically. The surgery may not require general anesthesia and the hospital stay is typically one or two days.

    Dr. Michael Roizen answered:
An inguinal hernia is a defect in which part of the small intestine bulges through a weak spot in the inguinal ring, located in the groin. These tend to need surgery to keep the bowel in place. They can come in two forms:

    • In boys, an indirect inguinal hernia slips through the inguinal ring and into the scrotum, making the testicle on that side look, shall we say, generous. The condition is rare in girls, but when it does occur, tissue from the small bowel or the female organs slides through a vulnerable area of the abdominal wall and into the groin.

    • A direct hernia, exclusive to boys, will look like a little bulge in the crease of the groin, right at the lower end of the abdomen.

An inguinal hernia is a condition in which intra-abdominal fat or a part of the small intestine, also called the small bowel, bulges through a weak area in the lower abdominal muscles. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin-the area between the abdomen and thigh. This type of hernia is called inguinal because fat or part of the intestine slides through a weak area at the inguinal ring, the opening to the inguinal canal. An inguinal hernia appears as a bulge on one or both sides of the groin. An inguinal hernia can occur any time from infancy to adulthood and is much more common in males than females. Inguinal hernias tend to become larger with time.

An inguinal hernia is a weakness, tear or hole that occurs in the tissue in the crease where the abdomen meets the thigh above either leg. Another body part, such as a loop of the bowel, may protrude through this tear or hole, causing a bulge and possibly a bowel blockage.

Inguinal hernias are more common in men than in women. Often the weakness in the tissue occurs prenatally, when a boy fetus's testes are descending from the abdomen into the scrotum. Years later, that tissue weakness may enlarge into a hole or tear possibly over time, or due to pressure put on the abdomen.

Coughing, straining during bowel movements, or weight lifting are all activities that can increase abdominal pressure, leading to a hernia.

If you develop an inguinal hernia, your doctor may be able to do surgery to push the wayward body part back in place and seal up the hole using stitches and/or a patch of surgical mesh.

An inguinal hernia (say "IN-gwuh-nul HER-nee-uh") happens when tissue pushes through a weak spot in your groin muscle. This causes a bulge in the groin or scrotum that may hurt or burn.

Surgery is the only way to fix it. But you may not need surgery if your hernia is small and painless.
