    Dr. Paul Ehrlich answered:
Allergy patch tests are done to determine whether contact with a particular substance is the cause of a skin condition, say a rash that may come from wearing certain earrings. An adhesive patch containing various potentially allergenic substances, such as preservatives and dyes, is placed on the skin, usually on the back. The patch is removed after 48 to 72 hours. A small skin rash similar to poison ivy will indicate contact allergy.
