What is a brain tumor?
-
A brain tumor is a collection of irregular cells that have formed a mass somewhere in the brain tissue. Brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). There are many types of brain tumors, which can affect both adults and children. Some brain tumors, although benign, can cause damage to the brain because as the tumor grows, it can hurt the other brain tissue surrounding it. Brain tumors can start in the brain (primary tumors), or they can develop as a result of cancer somewhere else in the body (secondary tumors). It is more likely that a secondary brain tumor will develop than it is for a primary tumor to appear.

Dr. Joshua Bederson of The Mount Sinai Medical Center answered:A brain tumor is an abnormal collection of cells in the brain that grow uncontrollably and form a mass. These tumors can be benign (noncancerous), or malignant (cancerous). Malignant tumors can invade nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Benign tumors do not spread, but depending on their size and location, they can cause symptoms by pressing on surrounding brain tissue.A brain tumor is an abnormal collection of cells in the brain that grow uncontrollably and form a mass. Healthwise answered:A brain tumor is a growth in the brain that leads to increased pressure inside the skull and the destruction and compression of normal brain tissue, causing loss of function. A brain tumor may cause headaches and seizures, as well as many other nervous system problems.
Treatment may involve radiation, chemotherapy, and/or surgery.

Dr. Harold Pikus of Baptist Health South Florida answered:A brain tumor is a growth of tissue within or adjacent to the brain. Brain tumors come in several varieties. They can be differentiated by the tissue of origin. Did the tumor arise from the brain or immediately surrounding tissues, or did it come from elsewhere in the body? This leads to the descriptive terms “primary” or “secondary,” respectively. Secondary tumors are generally referred to as “metastases” and imply malignancy. Primary tumors may be either malignant or benign. Usually the tumor is named for the tissue from which it arises.
Brain tumors may grow quickly or slowly depending on the type of tumor. They may commonly cause symptoms due to expansion and size leading to pressure on adjacent areas of brain or nerves, swelling associated with the tumor, irritation of the adjacent brain, or hemorrhage. Some tumors secrete substances that can have other effects on the body.A brain tumor is a growth of tissue within or adjacent to the brain. Brain tumors come in several varieties.
