What infection risks do I face after a stroke?

After a stroke, some patients are more susceptible to pneumonia and urinary tract infection. In the days and weeks following a stroke, patients are monitored closely by their stroke care team for complications. Antibiotics can be prescribed to combat or prevent infections. Additionally, the patient may be taught exercises to improve breathing and swallowing to help prevent pneumonia.
