Not having a well-formed sense of self can be terrifying, for it can feel like nonexistence or death. In psychology, this is referred to as narcissism. The word "narcissism" often brings to mind self-centered, self-absorbed, or self-aggrandizing, when it really means that a person has a very poorly defined sense of self and self-worth. It often goes along with a deep sense of sadness and loneliness, and it is very common in our culture, especially in people who have heart disease.
