Unfortunately there is currently no real way to entirely prevent canker sores. Practicing good oral health hygiene can help. However, the exact cause is unclear. Some possible reasons for getting a canker sore include: infections from bacteria, viruses or fungus; irritation from a loose orthodontic wire, a denture that doesn’t fit, or a sharp edge from a broken tooth or filling; or the symptom of a disease or disorder.

While a medical solution that prevents canker sores has not yet been found, one natural approach is a diet that regularly includes yogurt, which has bacteria beneficial for digestion. Fermented foods like yogurt contain acidophilus that can help absorb nutrients and fight off organisms that can make us ill. In addition, avoiding spicy, salty, or acidic foods should help lessen the pain of canker sore flare-ups when they do occur.

  3. Medical researchers do not have any current ideas for preventing aphthous stomatitis (canker sore). However, they have discovered that outbreaks occur under certain conditions, and minimizing those conditions can help reduce outbreaks. Eliminate spicy, salty, or acidic foods as well as any mouthwashes or toothpastes that trigger ulcer appearance. Try to control the level of stress in your life. Be careful when chewing food and brushing your teeth so that you don't accidentally injure the inside of your mouth.
