What are the health benefits of resveratrol for women?

Stacy Wiegman answered:Resveratrol, a plant chemical primarily found in red wine, grapes and peanuts, may have health benefits for women, especially during menopause when estrogen levels plummet. That's because resveratrol is a potent phytoestrogen, meaning it acts like estrogen in your body.
Phytoestrogens may help protect your heart and bones and defend against cancer. And some studies suggest that supplements of soy isoflavones, another common phytoestrogen, can help relieve hot flashes in women after menopause. Other studies have found no such benefit, though. And there's been much less research done on resveratrol's effect on menopause symptoms.
In addition, researchers caution that phytoestrogens may actually be harmful for some women, because the compounds could potentially stimulate estrogen-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer. More study is needed.
More research is needed before recommending resveratrol supplements to women for relief of menopause symptoms or disease prevention.

Dr. Lindsey Duncan answered:Heart disease is one of the biggest killers of women, and as women age, their heart health declines; especially after menopause. Worldwide, 8.6 million women die from heart disease each year. Resveratrol is the number one compound that supports heart health. Resveratrol is chock-full of antioxidants that help fight free radical damage, support healthy arteries, veins, and blood flow, which help support a healthy heart from the inside out. A concentrated form of resveratrol (such as a juice or supplement) has more antioxidants comparatively than glass after glass of red wine.Heart disease is one of the biggest killers of women, and as women age, their heart health declines; especially after menopause. Carolyn Z Thomas of Heart Sisters answered:Resveratrol has been positioned by some as the darling of all nutritional supplements for heart health - based on the hope that resveratrol or a compound based on it could mimic the effects of a severely restricted diet (which has been shown to extend the life of mice). But recent charges of widespread scientific fraud, involving 26 articles published in 11 journals, have been leveled by the University of Connecticut against Dr. Dipak K. Das, one of its own researchers, whose work on resveratrol had reported health benefits in red wine, as The New York Times reported (January 11, 2012). Das had written 117 scientific papers about the chemical.
So far, eight of these published papers have been retracted by the journals that had originally accepted his work for publication. The University of Connecticut found that Das had committed at least 145 counts of fabrication and falsification of his data.
