These benefits were plausible, as estrogens in test tubes increase arterial elasticity. That is, estrogens allow arteries to dilate, a sign that arteries are staying youthful. Also, estrogens increase the healthy or beneficial (HDL or high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. So, women on estrogen replacement therapy had fewer heart attacks, strokes, and less memory loss.
