What gynecological problems can affect young girls?

Dr. Mary Chappell answered:First the answer to this questions depends on the age you are talking about. I'll address premenarchal girls since once girls menstruate, they can have any GYN problem adult women do. The most common problem I see as a gynecologist is labial agglutination where the labia (lips) get stuck together from lack of estrogen. This can block the opening to the vagina (which usually isn't a problem) or the urethra (where urine comes out). The latter can lead to urinary tract infections. Since these girls haven't started their menses yet they have no estrogen, so the treatment is local/topical estrogen cream. This eventually separates the labia with time. It is usually not necessary to operate on this problem. Just patience.
There is also a certain rare cancer young girls can get. Any vaginal bleeding from a young girl, that isn't immediately after birth from mom's estrogen, should be evaluated.
Unfortunately I have also seen STD's from molestation in young girls.
