What is a good strategy for heart healthy grocery shopping?

American Heart Association answered:When you go grocery shopping, take time to read the nutrition labels on your purchases. Compare nutrients and calories in one food to those in another. The information may surprise you. You want to make sure that you aren’t bringing home foods high in saturated fat, trans fatcholesterol, sodium and added sugars!
One easy way to do “healthier” grocery shopping is to spend more time in the outer aisles of the store where fresh foods are kept. Spend less time in the middle aisles where packaged foods, snacks and soft drinks are stocked.

Plan ahead. It is important to plan your meals ahead of time and know what ingredients you will need to make those meals. Put these items in a grocery list and stick to ONLY buying those items. DO NOT go grocery shopping when you are hungry. Stick with foods that are nutrient dense: high fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables; lean proteins; and low-fat dairy products. Buy foods in reasonable portion sizes so that you do not feel like you need to overeat to avoid waste.Plan ahead. Ximena Jimenez of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics answered:The best strategy for healthy shopping is having a plan in a form of a shopping list. Make sure to include:
- Whole grains: whole wheat breads and tortillas and brown rice
- Low fat dairy products
- Fruits: fresh, canned, packed in its own juice and frozen
- Vegetables: fresh, low-sodium canned and frozen
- Lean cuts of meat, chicken, turkey and fish
Remember not to go to the grocery store hungry and plan your meals around vegetables, whole grains instead of meat.

Dr. Lisa Palmer answered:Those who have eating disorders can especially have a difficult time with grocery shopping! Sometimes as part of their recovery regimen we incorporate grocery shopping tours to go over not only what one is selecting for foods, but what she/he are thinking and feeling as they walk through the aisles and make their choices.
We may be educated about heart healthy food choices, but we can often make selections based on emotion! To avoid the dangers of un-heart healthy foods, you need to take a few simple steps.
- First-Educate yourself about healthy food choices, the benefits of the different food groups, and the functions of micronutrients in your body for health and wellness.
- Second--If you have certain dietary restrictions such as vegan or gluten free, be aware of the supplements or food choices recommended for balanced living.
- Third--It's never a good idea to go supermarket shopping when you are stressed, depressed, or hungry. If you've restricted food the whole day you may be setting yourself up for a binge later in the day. This is a vicious cycle that many who suffer from eating disorders experience.
- Fourth-Be mindful and recognize how your different feelings and emotions influence your food choices. Maybe when you are feeling sad or just wanting to "have it your way" you find yourself wanting to raid the candy aisle.
- Fifth-If it seems like an impossible task to eat healthy, ask yourself about the times that you are able to make healthy choices in spite of that voice telling you to "just have it your way, and be healthy tomorrow".
- Last but not least-take care of what needs to be taken care of in your life and develop positive thinking and coping skills. Remind yourself of the balance, health, and peace of mind you truly want, and use that to motivate you to follow the nutritionists instructions for heart healthy eating!
