Naturally, fruits and vegetables are low in sodium as well as other whole foods like grains, nuts, seeds, lean meats and poultry. You can easily avoid excessive sodium consumption by avoiding processed foods like deli meats, cheeses, boxed soups and mixes, canned soups and broths, and your standard TV diet. Beware of so called "diet" frozen food dinners like Lean Cuisine, which can be higher in sodium. Ideally, you want to have less than 140mg of sodium per serving.

You can also limit your intake of iodized salt, which is relatively low in actual sodium and without the other beneficial minerals, like potassium present; which are required for the body to absorb it properly. Thus, conventional table salt is not a healthy choice, since it does not digest well in water and can wind up being stored in various tissues and organs in the body overtime, leading to health problems like hypertension.

You can order a very healthful sea salt enhanced with minerals called Wright Salt from the Tacoma Clinic. It has been proven in Finland studies to stop heart disease and hypertension and lower cholesterol.
