What should I expect during chemotherapy bladder instillation?

A chemotherapy bladder instillation (chemotherapy instilled in the bladder at intervals to treat or prevent recurring bladder tumors) is a brief procedure that is usually painless. A small flexible tube called a catheter will be put into your bladder. The medicine is instilled into the bladder through the catheter over two to three minutes. The chemotherapy will be held in your bladder for one to two hours. Sometimes the nurse will instruct you to turn every 15 minutes for one hour while in bed. This is to have the chemotherapy come in contact with all the surfaces of the bladder. The catheter is removed after the chemotherapy is instilled or after the chemotherapy has been in your bladder for one to two hours. After the two hours, the chemotherapy should be urinated from the bladder. Be careful not to have the chemotherapy come in contact with your skin. Always wash your hands and genitals well, using soap and lots of water.
