What exercises should I do to improve my heart health?

UnitedHealthcare answered:Aerobic exercise is what the hearts likes best. It makes the heart become stronger and work more efficiently. Whether you choose biking, jogging, running, swimming, brisk walking, dancing or any other moderate activity, the most important thing is to just do it.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that all adults engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, or preferably every day of the week. Break up this activity into 15-minute sessions if that works better for you.
Always check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program.

Jonathan Penney of National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:Aerobic exercise is one of the best forms of exercise to help improve your heart health. Walking, jogging, running, and biking will all assist in improving your heart by increasing your cardiovascular endurance which is a result of your heart being active and working efficiently.
Be sure prior to any exercise you consult with your physician to make sure that you are cleared to exercise. Once you have been given the clearance, go outside, enjoy the beautiful weather and have a great walk!

RealAge answered:As we get older, the risk of developing heart disease increases -- and even more so for men, who have a higher overall risk. Fortunately, there are things men can do to prevent heart disease, including exercise. Here are the best workouts for your heart:
- Go aerobic. Your heart is a muscle, too, so you want to give it a good weekly workout. Any vigorous aerobic activity that gets your heart pumping and makes you breathe harder -- jogging, bike riding, playing tennis -- will exercise your heart and lungs, lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, and increase cardiovascular fitness. How much is enough? Breaking a sweat for 20 minutes three times per week is enough to strengthen your heart. More is even better.
- Add a little weight lifting. Strength training is also key for optimal cardiac health, and all you need are three 10-minute resistance-training workouts per week. We're not talking about bench pressing monster truck tires. We mean pushing and pulling against some kind of resistance (e.g., resistance bands, a weight machine, dumbbells, your own body weight), using the heaviest weight you can hoist while maintaining perfect form. This tiny amount of strength training builds muscle and stokes your calorie-burning furnace because muscle burns more calories than fat.
Along with a healthier heart, you'll reap a RealAge bonus: A physical activity program that builds stamina, strength, and flexibility can make your RealAge as much as 2.8 years younger.
