Fitness, for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, does not include jogging, mountain climbing, or high impact aerobics, although if you are capable of doing these things, by all means, enjoy them. On the other hand, if MS has reduced your level of physical capacity, there are still ways to incorporate some type of exercise into your daily schedule. Depending on the progression of your disease, you may wish to contact a physical or occupational therapist to assist you in choosing a fitness plan.

The exercise program you choose does not have to be a one-time, right or wrong decision. If you choose yoga, for example, and find that it isn't right for you, don't stop exercising. Try T'ai Chi or aquatics! Many city programs and local gyms or dance studios offer affordable classes and flexible schedules. Some facilities invite potential students to attend one class, free of charge. Another option is borrowing exercise videos or DVDs from the library. Before you invest any time or money in classes, shoes, or exercise attire, see what the program entails. If you are interested, talk to your doctor or physical therapist for suggestions on the best way to begin your exercise program, and always let your instructor know that you have multiple sclerosis (MS).

Once you choose a safe, accessible environment that suits your personal taste, select an activity that can be modified, as needed, for both intensity and duration.
