Electrophysiologists are cardiac specialists who treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias - abnormal heart rhythms. They research therapies that might alleviate this condition.

However, related areas of interest can include causes and treatment of atrial fibrillation, diagnosis and treatments of both common and rare problems that can lead to sudden cardiac death, device therapy for monitoring and treatment of congestive heart failure, as well as further improving pacemaker and ICD, or implantable cardioverter defibrillation therapy.

All physicians are scientists and, as such, all doctors may conduct research in the area of their expertise. Cardiac electrophysiologists often participate in research related to understanding the reasons why cardiac arrhythmias develop and how to treat and prevent them. Research may be in the form of a clinical trial in which many patients - or may be only a few patients - participate in trying the new treatment - perhaps a new ablation technique or drug. Other research is conducted in a bench/science laboratory perhaps to develop new dugs, and still other research may involve collaboration with industry/companies to develop new technologies that will improve our ability to treat arrhythmias.
