What should I eat to lower my risk for high blood pressure and stroke?

Dr. Natalia Rost answered:Eating multiple servings of vegetables and fruits lowers your risk for hypertension (high blood pressure) and stroke. Aim for five or more servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables per day. Eating more potassium, which is plentiful in foods like bananas, spinach, raisins, and nuts, can help keep blood pressure down. Consuming less sodium (salt) can also help with blood pressure control. To keep your sodium intake down, avoid the salt shaker and limit your intake of sodium-laden canned, processed, and frozen foods. Finally, cut down on the amount of trans fat and saturated fat.Helpful? 2 people found this helpfulEating multiple servings of vegetables and fruits lowers your risk for hypertension (high blood pressure) and stroke. Dr. Alan Seifer of Baptist Health South Florida answered:A healthy diet applies to overall fitness and can reduce your risk for stroke and high blood pressure. This includes nutritious foods from all the basic groups: fruits, vegetables, lean meats, unrefined whole grains, and fat free, low-calorie dairy products.
Eating fish at least twice a week has shown to have benefits from omega-3 fatty acids. For example, salmon, trout and herring may help lower your risk of death from coronary artery disease.
The right number of calories for you is usually calculated based on your age, current weight and physical activity.
Limit foods and beverages high in calories but low in nutrients, and limit how much saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium you eat. Read labels on food and beverage containers to determine proper nutritional ingredients and daily recommended percentages. Do not use the salt shaker. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and wash canned foods.
All of this will help you attain a healthy body weight, a desirable blood cholesterol level and a normal blood pressure.Helpful? 2 people found this helpfulA healthy diet applies to overall fitness and can reduce your risk for stroke and high blood pressure.
