Dr. Patricia K Farris answered:The best way you can prevent bruising is to avoid anything that thins your blood. This includes drinking alcohol, vitamin E supplements, aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. You should discontinue these medication two weeks before the procedure. If a bruise does occur the best approach is a tincture of time.

Dr. Ellen Marmur answered:To minimize the bruising that occurs with any procedure, especially those involving needles, many of my patients swear by the herbal remedy Arnica montana. Topical creams and tinctures can be applied on the bruise itself, and taking homeopathic arnica tablets before and after the treatment is believed to decrease trauma to the skin. Eating foods containing vitamin K, such as spinach and broccoli, may help blood coagulate and reduce bruising too (although applying it topically is ineffectual). Don't take a nap or press on the area for eight hours because you may push the neurotoxin to a different muscle and develop ptosis. The last thing you'd want to do is have any kind of facial massage afterward. I don't like to do fractionated laser and Botox on the same day, for instance, because the patient gets swelling from the laser procedure and that can make the neurotoxin migrate.

Burke Lennihan RN CCH answered:Sinecch is an Arnica-based product that was shown in two research studies to reduce swelling, bruising and post-op pain after facelifts and liposuction. Clinical experience shows that it works after Botox as well. Sinecch uses a much higher dose of Arnica than is commonly available in health food stores, which may explain its effectiveness. Sinecch is easily available online, and the research studies are described on the website alpinepharm.com.
My clients have reported good results from simple Arnica 30c from any health food store, although it has not been researched as Sinecch has.
