Kristy France of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:
Dextrose is used to treat hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels caused by high levels of insulin in the blood or insulin shock. Dextrose can also be used as a source of carbohydrate calories for patients whose oral intake is restricted or inadequate to maintain nutritional requirements. Dextrose should be administered slowly to prevent hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels.
