What does a dental crown treat?
-
American Dental Association answered:Dental crowns treat many conditions. For instance, you may need a crown to cover a tooth to help restore it to its normal shape and size. Crowns can also make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance.
A crown can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining to hold the filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that’s already broken. A crown is a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped. It’s also used to cover a dental implant.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:A dental crown is used to treat, or help with, several dental conditions:
- A crown can be a good choice if you have a tooth that is so broken or damaged by tooth decay that a filling is no longer an option. Because the crown protects the tooth from further decay, this can be a good way to save a tooth and prevent having a tooth extraction by your dentist.
- A crown can “treat” a cracked tooth and restore it to a more natural-looking tooth by keeping together the two (or more) parts of the tooth, since the crown acts a cap placed on top of a tooth.
- A crown can help treat a case of poor self-image, by helping to cover up teeth that are unusually shaped or are stained or discolored. For example, if you took an antibiotic called tetracycline as a child, you could end up with permanently stained yellowish teeth.
- A crown can also help treat a missing tooth or several missing teeth. It does this by acting as a point of support, or an anchor, for a dental bridge (also called a fixed partial denture) that your dentist can place to fill in a gap made by a missing tooth (or teeth).

Dr. Saul Miller answered:A crown may be used to improve appearance and enhance esthetics of a smile, but it is also used to restore a fractured tooth and/or a tooth that has had root canal treatment. In addition, the placement of a crown can help prevent fracture of a tooth that has a large filling that has caused the cusps and walls of the tooth to be weakened.
It is important to note that you do not have to wait for a tooth to fracture to place a crown, because when a tooth fractures it may not be restorable.

Dr. Gretchen Seibert answered:A dental crown can be used to treat a tooth that has lost integrity due to large caries (cavity), malformation, or an injury. A crown can be used to strengthen a tooth where most of the structure above the gumline has been removed due to extensive decay. A crown may be needed after a tooth has received a root canal treatment to restore the tooth to proper form and function. Sometimes a tooth may have an internal fracture and a crown is placed to prevent extension of the facture and tooth loss. A crown may be placed for esthetic reasons if the tooth structure formed deficiently.
