What is deep vein thrombosis, and how can it cause pulmonary embolism?
-
Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where a blood clot develops deep in the body, most often in the leg. About 90 percent of all pulmonary embolisms are caused by deep vein thromboses. When the blood clot breaks loose, it can travel through the bloodstream and cause a blockage in the arteries of the lungs.

Dr. John Lipman answered:Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where blood clots form most commonly in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis. These clots can break off and travel to the heart and lungs (aka pulmonary emboli) which increase the right heart pressures and can cause right heart failure or even death. 15-25% of patients that develop pulmonary emboli die within 30 days of the diagnosis.
