Every facility may operate a bit differently, but the usual case would be for the patient to present to the hospital and if admitted to aritical care under the admitting doctor or transferred to the ICU requiring the critical care doctors to assume the care of the patient. It will depend on the needs of the patient and the tpe of ICU. For instance, in a trauma ICU, the patient is admitted under the trauma doctor who assumed care of the patient in the ER. In that case the team of trauma physicians will take care of the patient as a team. The patient will see different trauma doctors depending on what services they need and who is rounding in the unit. Critical care nurses will be assigend to care for patients in the ICU and are always present in an ICU setting. Nurses and doctors collaborate to make sure that the patient receives the treatment and care he or she needs.
